island.about

The most visually striking island in the Canaries — blinding white houses against jet-black lava, turquoise coves, volcanic vineyards, and César Manrique's extraordinary art.

Lanzarote is unlike anywhere else on Earth. The contrast is what hits you first — brilliant white cubic houses against jet-black volcanic rock, emerald vines growing from craters, turquoise water lapping at black-sand beaches. The island was shaped by the Timanfaya eruptions of 1730–36, which covered a third of the island in lava and created a landscape of extraordinary, otherworldly beauty. Artist César Manrique spent his life ensuring that beauty was preserved — his buildings, sculptures, and strict planning laws mean Lanzarote remains one of the most architecturally coherent islands in the world. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993.

island.islandHighlights

White Houses & Black Lava

The iconic contrast of Lanzarote — blinding white cubic houses with green doors and windows against jet-black volcanic rock. Every village is a photographer's dream.

Timanfaya Fire Mountains

A national park of extraordinary volcanic drama — geysers, heat vents, and a landscape that looks like the surface of Mars. Camel rides across the lava fields are unforgettable.

La Geria Volcanic Wine

Vines growing from individual craters in black volcanic ash — one of the world's most extraordinary wine landscapes. The Malvasía white wine is exceptional.

Papagayo Coves

The most beautiful beaches in the Canaries — crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, and dramatic volcanic cliffs. Accessible only by dirt road, which keeps them pristine.

César Manrique's Legacy

The artist-architect transformed Lanzarote — his Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, and Cactus Garden are masterpieces that blend art, architecture, and volcanic landscape.

Food & Local Cuisine

Fresh Atlantic fish, papas arrugadas, and the island's own Malvasía wine. The fishing village of Órzola and the restaurants of Puerto del Carmen are the best places to eat.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

17–21°C

The warmest winter in the Canaries — Lanzarote's flat terrain and proximity to Africa mean more sunshine than the other islands. Perfect for beach holidays.

Spring (Mar–May)

19–23°C

Ideal conditions for exploring. Warm but not too hot. The volcanic landscape is at its most dramatic in the clear spring light.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

25–30°C

Hot and very dry. Strong trade winds make the heat bearable and the water sports excellent. The Papagayo coves are at their most beautiful.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

22–26°C

Warm sea, golden light, and the island at its most relaxed. The best time for wine tasting in La Geria and exploring the volcanic interior.

island.travelTips

  • 1

Rent a car — Lanzarote is compact but the best places (Papagayo, La Geria, Timanfaya) require your own transport.

  • 2

Visit Timanfaya early morning — the light on the volcanic landscape is extraordinary and the crowds are smaller.

  • 3

The La Geria wine route has 20+ bodegas — most offer free tastings. El Grifo is the oldest winery in the Canaries.

  • 4

Papagayo beaches require a small entrance fee (€3) — it's worth it to keep them uncrowded and pristine.

  • 5

César Manrique's Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río are must-sees — book tickets online to avoid queues.

  • 6

From Canada: Fly direct to Tenerife or Gran Canaria with Air Canada or Air Transat (Oct 2026–Apr 2027), then take a short ferry or connecting flight to Lanzarote (ACE). Total journey from Toronto approximately 10 hours.
