island.about

The beach island — 150km of pristine white-sand coastline, the world's best windsurfing, and the most consistently sunny weather in Europe.

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands and the closest to Africa — just 100km from the Sahara. Its ancient volcanic landscape has been sculpted by wind and time into sweeping white-sand beaches, towering dunes, and dramatic headlands. The island is a paradise for beach lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and anyone seeking sun-drenched relaxation. Corralejo in the north buzzes with beach bars, restaurants, and nightlife. The Jandía peninsula in the south offers some of the most spectacular and uncrowded beaches in Europe. And the constant trade winds make this the undisputed world capital of windsurfing and kitesurfing.

island.islandHighlights

Corralejo & the Dunes

The north's most popular resort town — a lively strip of beach bars, restaurants, and nightlife backed by a UNESCO natural park of white sand dunes stretching 10km along the coast.

World Capital of Windsurfing

Sotavento Beach hosts the annual Windsurfing World Championships every July. The constant trade winds and flat-water lagoon make this the world's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing destination.

Diving & Snorkeling

Crystal-clear waters with visibility up to 30m. Shipwrecks, rays, sea turtles, and vibrant reef life. The waters around Lobos Island are particularly spectacular.

Jandía Peninsula Beaches

The south's wild coastline — Cofete beach stretches 12km with dramatic cliffs and crashing Atlantic waves. Morro Jable and Sotavento offer calmer, resort-style beach life.

Cycling & Active Holidays

The flat terrain and quiet roads make Fuerteventura ideal for cycling. The island hosts major cycling events and has excellent infrastructure for active holidays.

Extraordinary Light & Photography

The clarity of the Saharan air and the island's flat landscape create a photographer's dream — the contrast of white sand, turquoise water, and golden dunes is extraordinary.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

18–22°C

The warmest of the Canaries in winter — closest to Africa means more sunshine and less cloud. Perfect for beach holidays when the rest of Europe is freezing.

Spring (Mar–May)

20–24°C

Ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Warm but not too hot. The beaches are uncrowded and the water is crystal clear.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

26–32°C

Hot and very dry. Strong trade winds make water sports excellent but can be uncomfortable on the beach. Corralejo is buzzing with life.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

23–27°C

Warm sea temperatures, calmer winds, and beautiful light. One of the best times to visit for a relaxed beach holiday.

island.travelTips

  • 1

The north (Corralejo) is livelier with more restaurants and nightlife; the south (Jandía) is quieter and more resort-focused. Choose based on your style.

  • 2

Rent a 4WD to reach Cofete beach — the dirt road is rough but the reward is one of Europe's most spectacular and unspoiled beaches.

  • 3

Wind is constant — pack a windbreaker even in summer. The trade winds are what make the water sports world-class.

  • 4

Betancuria, the former capital in the interior, is a beautiful historic village worth a half-day visit — completely different from the coast.

  • 5

The Canarian goat cheese (queso majorero) from Fuerteventura is a protected designation of origin — try it at every opportunity.

  • 6

From Canada: Fly direct to Tenerife or Gran Canaria with Air Canada or Air Transat (Oct 2026–Apr 2027), then take a short ferry or connecting flight to Fuerteventura (FUE). Total journey from Toronto approximately 10 hours.
