island.about

Las Palmas' colonial grandeur, the world's finest beach dunes, vibrant carnival, championship golf, and a long-stay lifestyle that keeps visitors coming back for months.

Gran Canaria is the most diverse island in the Canaries — and one of the most underrated destinations in Europe. The capital Las Palmas is a real, living city with a magnificent historic quarter (Vegueta), a cathedral that took 400 years to build, and a beach right in the city centre. Every February, Las Palmas erupts into one of Spain's most spectacular carnivals. In the south, Maspalomas offers 7km of golden dunes and resort beaches. Between them: pine forests, mountain villages, championship golf courses, and a long-stay expat community that has discovered the island's extraordinary year-round climate.

island.islandHighlights

Las Palmas — Historic Vegueta

The island's capital has a magnificent colonial heart — Vegueta's cobblestone streets, the Casa de Colón (Columbus House), and the stunning Gothic-Neoclassical cathedral.

Las Palmas Carnival

One of Spain's most spectacular carnivals — elaborate costumes, the famous Drag Queen Gala, live music, and street parties that rival Tenerife's in scale and energy.

Maspalomas Dunes & Beach

Seven kilometres of golden sand dunes meeting the Atlantic — a natural reserve that feels like the Sahara. The resort strip behind it offers every amenity imaginable.

Championship Golf

Over 18 golf courses across the island, many with ocean views and year-round perfect conditions. Gran Canaria is one of Europe's premier golf destinations.

Long Stays & Expat Life

Gran Canaria's extraordinary climate — 22°C average year-round — has attracted a large community of long-stay visitors from Northern Europe. Excellent infrastructure, healthcare, and lifestyle.

Food & Nightlife

Las Palmas has a thriving restaurant scene — fresh Atlantic seafood, Canarian cuisine, and a nightlife that runs until dawn. The Triana and Vegueta neighbourhoods are the epicentre.

Peak long-stay season — warm, sunny, and the time for Carnival (February). The south is reliably sunny; the north can be greener and cooler.

20–24°C

Excellent weather, fewer crowds, and great value. The mountains are green and the beaches are uncrowded. Perfect for golf.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

24–28°C

Hot and sunny in the south. The north and mountains stay cooler. Beach season at its peak — Maspalomas is buzzing.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

21–25°C

Warm sea, golden light, and the island at its most relaxed. The best time for hiking the interior and exploring Las Palmas.

island.travelTips

  • 1

Las Palmas is a real city — spend at least 2 nights there. The Vegueta quarter and the city beach (Las Canteras) are both extraordinary.

  • 2

Carnival is in February — the Drag Queen Gala is one of the most spectacular events in Spain. Book accommodation months in advance.

  • 3

For long stays, the south (Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés) has the most infrastructure. The north (Las Palmas) is more authentic and urban.

  • 4

Golf packages are excellent value — many resorts offer stay-and-play deals. The Meloneras and Salobre courses are world-class.

  • 5

Rent a car to explore the interior — the mountain villages of Tejeda and Artenara are stunning and completely different from the coast.

  • 6

Air Canada and Air Transat fly direct from Toronto (YYZ) and Montréal (YUL) to Gran Canaria (LPA), October 2026 through April 2027 — approximately 8 hours non-stop. Outside that season, connect via Madrid (Iberia) or London for year-round access.
